I recently did a poll on both Twitter and Instagram for what my next blog post should be about. Between my updated skincare routine and Fenty Beauty, the latter won. However, I’ve been kind of itching to write this skincare post and before you can have poppin’ makeup, you have to have poppin’ skin. So, I decided to combine the two posts! Yes, I know I’ve already written about my skincare routine but I’ve updated it a lot since then.
Last spring, I was using Shea Moisture’s African Black Soap Problem Skin Facial Wash & Scrub as a cleanser and then I moisturized with e.l.f.’s Daily Hydration Moisturizer in the morning and with shea butter at night. It was working at the time but I wanted to try new things to see if I could make my skin even better.
I recently teamed up with Her Campus and Clarisonic to try Clarisonic’s Mia 1 ($129), Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser ($18) (which is perfect because I needed a tough but gentle cleanser), and three of their brush heads (the Acne, Deep Pore Cleansing, and Radiance brush heads, which are $27 each). If you aren’t familiar with Clarisonic and their products, it’s a sonic cleanser that rids your face of all the debris, dirt, and oil from your face and flushes water and your cleanser into your skin and pores to give you a super fresh and clean feeling. Using a Clarisonic cleans your skin six times deeper than your hands alone (especially if you aren’t washing your hands before washing your face!!). Clarisonic’s Mia 1 has one speed and comes with the Radiance brush head, which is a great brush head for nearly all skin types.
I started using my Clarisonic products just a little over a month ago and I fell in love with them from the first try. My skin automatically felt so much cleaner and smoother. The Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser feels like it was literally made for my skin and it was! So for all my people out there with sensitive, acne-prone skin, you should definitely try this cleanser. It’s gentle but it’s powerful as it contains 2% Salicylic Acid to fight breakouts and micro-exfoliating Lipo Hydroxy Acid to remove the dirt from your face. I pair my cleanser with the Acne brush head in the morning and with the Deep Pore Cleansing brush head at night to help get rid of excess makeup and get a deep cleanse before I apply a mask. My favorite brush head is probably the Deep Pore Cleansing brush head because I really feel like it’s always doing to absolute most to cleanse my face and pores and I love that.
Over this past month, I’ve really enjoyed watching my skin transform and become smoother and more even in skin tone. Yes, I already had pretty nice skin as far as handling my breakouts in a timely manner but I’ve really loved the way that these products have been working to make my skin even better than before. I also added a toner to my skincare routine; I mixed together apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle (1/3 ACV & 2/3 water) and mist my face after my cleanser or mask for the night. Toners are great for oily and acne prone skin (both of which I have) and they really help with minimizing your pores and ridding your face of pesky blackheads and acne scars. I still continue to use shea butter as my nightly moisturizer and I’m currently on the search for a new daily moisturizer so if you have any suggestions, let ya girl know!
You can get a Clarisonic for 15% off here with the code HERCAMPUS and Clarisonic also offers a monthly payment plan so you can get your very own Mia 1 for less than 63 cents a day!
Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for:
Fenty Beauty was released on September 8th on their website and in Sephora and I’m lucky enough to be a proud owner of three items from the collection. About a week after the release I picked up the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer ($32) and the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo in Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby ($34) from Sephora and had to order my Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in Shade 380 ($34) from Fenty Beauty’s site because it was sold out in every Sephora in DC. I’m not gonna lie, I was really pressed to get my hands on at least one product from RiRi’s line because it looked amazing in every photo, it got amazing reviews from my favorite YouTubers, the shade range (!!!), and the affordability.
First, let me just say that I really love the packaging, it’s simple and not overdone at all and the primer smells amazing lol! Not only does it smell amazing, but it also works wonders. The main purpose of the foundation is to blur any imperfections such as pimples, acne scars, etc and it does just that. When you pair the primer with the foundation, it’s magic. The foundation really lives up to its medium to full coverage claims, every time I wear it I feel as if each of my problem areas isn’t noticeable. I love that it still gives a really natural look and blends with my LA Girl Pro Concealer (in Fawn) really well. Y’all the Killawatt highlighter is probably my favorite product because both shades are so subtle but can be built up to make you glow like a star in the night sky. In my duo, Mean Money is the really subtle shade that is perfect for when you aren’t feeling the need to shine bright like a diamond, but Hu$tla Baby is perfect for shining. I usually apply Mean Money first and then add Hu$tla Baby for the ultimate glow.
As for Fenty Beauty’s claims of being longwear beauty products, they’re accurate as hell. I really wanted to make sure that I tried out Fenty Beauty in multiple situations to test out if it really was a longwear beauty line. I’ve worn each Fenty Beauty product I purchased throughout an entire day of classes, a football game, a 2-mile walk, a house party or two and it lasted perfectly. It even lasted throughout Yardfest and the homecoming tailgate. Nothing was out of place at the end of each event. Sidenote: I always pair my makeup with Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray (which has failed me before honestly) so this isn’t just based on Fenty Beauty’s longevity alone.
All in all, better skin makes for better makeup and you should definitely take the time to make sure the skin underneath your makeup is improving every day. I want y’all to glow with AND without makeup, and you should want the same.
